Janet Hayes mainly works in pastels being attracted to their unique texture, the possibility of glowing colour and the variety of artwork achievable from a quick sketch to a more detailed, finished painting.

Her subject matter includes portraits, figures, still life and occasionally landscapes inspired by areas such as Kakadu in Northern Australia.
Janet studied at the Melbourne College of Decoration in the mid seventies, then with Melbourne artist/teacher Con Pappas before twice travelling to New York to study pastel portraiture with portraitist, artist, tutor Daniel Greene in the mid eighties.

Pastels Exhibition and Pastels Calendar '09
A group of Healesville artists who work in pastels have got together to produce a 2009 calendar of their artworks.
The calendar will be available at an exhibition of the original artworks, some of which will be for sale, at Healesville Fine Art Gallery, 278 Badger Creek Road, Healesville. Phone: 59621129

Janet Hayes has had eight individual exhibitions and has been included in several group exhibitions, including venues in New York, London and throughout Australia, and has participated in touring exhibitions of France, Canada and China.

Among several awards Janet Hayes has received is the Allied Artists of America Award at the Pastel Society of America annual exhibition, New York City in 1993, and, more recently, in 2007, an Honourable Mention at the ESSA International Exhibition, Fairhope, Alabama.
Janet has written a series of articles for “Australian Artist” magazine, her work was included in the book “Best of Pastels 2” Rockport Publishing, U.S.A. and was also featured in the first issue of “Pastel Artist International” magazine (cover story) |
