Janet Hayes mainly works in pastels being attracted to their unique texture, the possibility of glowing colour and the variety of artwork achievable from a quick sketch to a more detailed, finished painting.

2009- Regeneration of a Whole Community
In 2010 Janet was commissioned to paint an 8'x6' Mural in acrylic paint to commemorate the regeneration after the 2009 bushfires in Toolangi. The Mural "2009- Regeneration of a Whole Community" has been installed at the CJ Dennis Hall in Toolangi. The mural is based on the regeneration of the enviroment; particularly the grass trees which only flower after a fire, and the regeneration of the community which "flowered" after the fires- depicted by the painted "photographs", based on photos taken by the Toolangi community, placed in the feathers of a lyrebird. The lyrebird is prolific in Toolangi.
